چکیده

The application of the 1Dand 2D-ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) methods to the structural study of dilute colloidal silica particle dispersions is reviewed. A single colloidal crystal showed 22 sharp diffraction peaks, which allowed us to uniquely determine the lattice symmetry (body-centered-cubic), lattice constant (around 0.3–0.4 m) and crystal orientation. In dilute dispersions, the closest interparticle spacing was confirmed to be smaller than the average spacing, pointing to the important role of a counterion-mediated attraction between the particles. The scattering profile had six-fold and four-fold symmetries with 111 and 001 directions being parallel to the axis of the capillary (dispersion container), respectively. In both cases, the (110) planes, the most densely packed planes of bcc, were in contact with and parallel to the capillary surface, confirming the presence of a possibly counterion-mediated attractive interaction between negatively charged interface and particles. After the capillary was shaken, only the six-fold symmetry was found, which is reasonable in the light of larger contact between the capillary surface and the (110) planes (and hence greater stabilization of the system) than for the four-fold symmetry. Ultra-small-angle x-ray-scattering study: preliminary experiments in colloidal suspensions.

We report here a multiple-reflection type ultra-small-angle x-ray-scattering apparatus constructed according to the principle proposed by Bonse and Hart. The ultra-small-angle x-ray scattering technique enables us to investigate the distribution of solutes or particles in turbid systems, which could not be studied by the conventional light-scattering and microscopic methods. By this method, the...

Nucleation and crystal growth in a suspension of charged colloidal silica spheres with bi-modal size distribution studied by time-resolved ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering.

A suspension of charged colloidal silica spheres exhibiting a bi-modal size distribution of particles, thereby mimicking a binary mixture, was studied using time-resolved ultra-small-angle synchrotron X-ray scattering (USAXS). The sample, consisting of particles of diameters d(A) = (104.7 ± 9.0) nm and d(B) = (88.1 ± 7.8) nm (d(A)/d(B) ≈ 1.2), and with an estimated composition A(0.6(1))B(0.4(1)...

Application of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) for differentiation between normal and cancerous breast tissues

ABSTRACT Background: Coherent scattering leads to diffraction effects and especially constructive interferences. Theseinterferences carry some information about the molecular structure of the tissue. As breast cancer isthe most widespread cancer in women, this project evaluated the application of small angleX-ray scattering (SAXS) for differentiation between normal and cancerous breast tissues....

The role of ions in the self-healing behavior of soft particle suspensions.

Impurities in crystals generally cause point defects and can even suppress crystallization. This general rule, however, does not apply to colloidal crystals formed by soft microgel particles [Iyer ASJ, Lyon LA (2009) Angew Chem Int Ed 48:4562-4566], as, in this case, the larger particles are able to shrink and join the crystal formed by a majority of smaller particles. Using small-angle X-ray s...

Water density in the electric double layer at the insulator/electrolyte solution interface.

I studied the spatial structure of the thick transition region between n-hexane and a colloidal solution of 7-nm silica particles by X-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence small-angle scattering. The interfacial structure is discussed in terms of a semiquantitative interface model wherein the potential gradient at the n-hexane/sol interface reflects the difference in the potentials of "image ...
